As per recent study published in Nature Food,\u00a0Climate change can\u00a0destroy the marine and freshwater systems\u00a0of Africa, South and Southeast Asia\u00a0and\u00a0Indo\u00a0Pacific.\u00a0This\u00a0may\u00a0destroy\u00a0livelihoods\u00a0and\u00a0economies of countries in the regions, if appropriate measures are not taken in time to mitigate the crisis.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the findings of the report?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

First,\u00a0<\/strong>India, along with other South Asian countries, is at a \u2018high\u2019 risk to its aquatic food systems\u00a0under a high-emissions, no-mitigation scenario.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second,\u00a0<\/strong>countries with high climate vulnerability\u00a0may face risk in the\u00a0food system outcomes, either in marine fisheries or in freshwater and deltaic fisheries and aquaculture.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third,<\/strong> with a larger magnitude of warming on large continental land masses than in the ocean, freshwater fisheries in some countries are projected to face \u2018very high\u2019 hazards by the mid-twenty-first century, especially in water-stressed areas such as northern Africa and the Middle East. <\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of nutrition this equates to a reduction in aquatic food access and limit essential nutrients such as iron, zinc, vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids leading to nutrients deficiency.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the recommendations?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

First,<\/strong> there is urgent need to\u00a0support the long-term sustainability, resilience, and equity of aquatic food systems.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second,<\/strong> we need to reduce\u00a0actual climate hazards, greenhouse gas emissions reductions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third,<\/strong> we need\u00a0farming climate-tolerant species with reduced feed dependence and building barriers and restoring coastal ecosystems to protect against storms.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fourth,<\/strong> reducing dependence on climate-sensitive aquatic foods and sectors and vulnerability through investments that benefit human development irrespective of climate change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
