Recently, UNESCO designated <\/span>Mura-Drava-Danube (MDD) as the world\u2019s first \u2018five-country biosphere reserve.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The biosphere reserve covers 700\u00a0kilometres\u00a0of the Mura, Drava and Danube rivers and stretches across\u00a0<\/span>Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia. <\/span><\/b>The total area of the reserve \u2014 a million hectares \u2014 in the so-called \u2018Amazon of Europe<\/strong>\u2019, makes it the largest riverine protected area on the continent.<\/p>\n

Why MDD was designated as a biosphere reserve?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

I<\/span>t will\u00a0advance the protection and\u00a0revitalisation\u00a0of the Mura-Drava-Danube area and boost sustainable business practices. It will also enhance cross-border cooperation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The aim is to\u00a0revitalize\u00a025,000 km of rivers and protect 30 per cent of the European Union\u2019s land area by 2030.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is MDD significant?<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

Firstly<\/em>, <\/span><\/b>the reserve is home to floodplain forests, gravel and sand banks, river islands, oxbows and meadows.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secondly,<\/b><\/em> it is home to continental Europe\u2019s highest density of breeding white-tailed eagle, as well as endangered species such as the little tern, black stork, otters, beavers and sturgeons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thirdly,<\/b><\/em> it is also an important annual resting and feeding place for more than 250,000 migratory birds<\/span>, according to WWF. <\/span><\/p>\n

Fourthly,<\/strong><\/em> the reserve is inhabited by almost 900,000 people too.<\/span><\/p>\n
