Introduction<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The COVID-19 pandemic caused severe social and economic disruption and also changed the living standards of the people. It has also slowed down the global effort to drive forward sustainable development and achieve the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To achieve\u00a0global sustainability, Thailand\u00a0came with\u00a0homegrown development approach of \u201cSufficiency Economy Philosophy\u201d (SEP)<\/em>. This approach\u00a0can serve as an alternative approach to achieve\u00a0the SDGs and building back better without leaving no one behind\u00a0in the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP)?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

SEP is a philosophy that guides one\u2019s inner thinking to immunize oneself from external shocks.\u00a0Under sufficiency economy,\u00a0one\u00a0can consider going beyond one basic need as long as one’s existing means and capacity are not exceeded.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the purpose of SEP?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The purpose of\u00a0SEP is to encourage oneself to be sensible and realistic.\u00a0SEP can be applied to any sectors and any areas of operations and at all levels,\u00a0i.e.\u00a0family, local community, business and public organizations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SEP serves as a foundation, and compass for sustainability,\u00a0<\/span>based on three principles and two pillars.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First<\/span><\/b>, moderation, which entails producing and consuming within one\u2019s capacity and avoiding overindulgence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second<\/span><\/b>, reasonableness, which is using one\u2019s mental faculties to examine the causes and consequences of actions on one\u2019s well-being, household and community.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third<\/span><\/b>, prudence, which refers to risk management in order to be prepared for impacts from any disruptions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the two\u00a0pillars?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The two pillars are:<\/span><\/p>\n

First<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0knowledge. It enables effective planning and execution of developmental activities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0ethics and values.\u00a0It\u00a0enhances human development by emphasizing honesty, altruism, and perseverance, with creating active, engaged citizens, and promoting good governance as the ultimate goal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is\u00a0New Theory Agriculture?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

To\u00a0strengthen\u00a0development efforts based on SEP, in the rural areas\u00a0the \u201cNew Theory Agriculture\u201d has been introduced. The initiative is to divide the land into sections for multiple purposes such as crops cultivation, livestock farming, fisheries, and water resources.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Advantages<\/strong>: This ensures sufficient resources for household consumption and reducing reliance on food imports. It has increased agricultural productivity, income generation, and living standards. It has improved the livelihoods of communities nationwide.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the applications of SEP in times of COVID-19?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

SEP has succeeded in alleviating Thailand to overcome many crises in the past and during COVID-19. Many people were able to continue their way of lives in unprecedented times through self-immunity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SEP has inspired numerous projects around the world. Thailand\u2019s\u00a0SEP-based development models are designed to\u00a0<\/span>assist developing countries to tackle the issue of excessive dependence on foreign aid<\/span><\/b>. The objective is to build resilient communities\u00a0by enhancing productivity\u00a0in\u00a0income and resources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the way forward?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Thailand used SEP to overcome the effects of COVID-19 pandemic and achieve the SDGs. Hence, SEP provides a practical and worthy development path that other nations can adapt to their specific contexts. <\/span><\/p>\n

Thailand is\u00a0ready to work with partners worldwide on cooperation for development and share the benefits of the application of the SEP as Thailand\u2019s gift to the world.<\/p>\n
