{"id":136085,"date":"2021-09-22T19:18:58","date_gmt":"2021-09-22T13:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=136085"},"modified":"2021-09-25T15:20:56","modified_gmt":"2021-09-25T09:50:56","slug":"explained-why-assam-govt-is-burning-2500-rhino-horns-in-a-special-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/explained-why-assam-govt-is-burning-2500-rhino-horns-in-a-special-ceremony\/","title":{"rendered":"Explained: Why Assam govt is burning 2,500 rhino horns in a special ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assam will mark <strong>World Rhino Day<\/strong> \u2014 September 22 \u2014 with a special ceremony by burning a stockpile of nearly 2,500 horns of the one-horned rhinoceros.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>About Greater One-Horned Rhino<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One-Horned Rhino (or \u201cIndian rhino\u201d) are identified by a single black horn about a grey-brown hide with skin folds, which gives it an armour-plated appearance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species is solitary, except when adult males or rhinos nearing adulthood gather to graze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They primarily graze, with a diet consisting almost entirely of grasses as well as leaves, branches of shrubs and trees, fruit, and aquatic plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Habitat of Greater One-Horned Rhino<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One-Horned Rhino is re<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stricted to small habitats in Indo-Nepal terai and northern West Bengal and Assam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is home to more than 75% of the greater one-horned rhino population of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, one-horned rhinos can be found in Assam, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among these states, Assam has the largest population of greater-one horned rhinos, with more than 90% in Kaziranga National Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Conservation Status of Greater One-Horned Rhino<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>IUCN Red List: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vulnerable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Appendix I\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Wildlife Protection Act, 197<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2<\/strong>: Schedule I<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Threats faced by Greater One-Horned Rhino<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>Poaching of Horns: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rhino horn is used in traditional Chinese medicine to cure a range of ailments, from cancer to hangovers, and it is also used as an aphrodisiac in Vietnam, possessing a rhino horn is considered a status symbol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Habitat loss<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The enormous reduction in the rang<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e of rhinos was mainly caused by the disappearance of alluvial plain grasslands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Population density<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High population density in some parks leads to lower breeding rates.
