The two more Indian beaches namely <\/span>Kovalam beach in Chennai<\/strong> and Eden beach in Puducherry<\/strong> have been awarded the Blue Flag certification<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is Blue Flag Certification?<\/b><\/h5>\n

\u2018Blue Flag\u2019<\/b> is a certification that can be obtained by a beach, marina, or sustainable boating tourism operator, and serves as an eco-label.<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The certification<\/b> is awarded by the Denmark-based<\/strong> non-profit Foundation for Environmental Education<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Criterion:<\/b> The certification is accorded based on 33 stringent criteria under four major heads:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Environmental education and information,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Bathing water quality\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Safety and services at the beaches<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Environment management and conservation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Indian Sites under Blue Flag: <\/b>There are now total of 10 sites under Blue Flag Certification. These are Shivrajpur – Gujarat, Ghoghla – Diu, Kaskarkod and Padubidri \u2013 Karnataka, Kappad \u2013 Kerala, Rushikonda \u2013 Andhra Pradesh, Golden \u2013 Odisha, Radhanagar – Andaman and Nicobar, Kovalam – TamilNadu and Eden beach in Puducherry.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What is the Beach<\/b> Environment & Aesthetics Management Services (BEAMS) Initiative?<\/b><\/h5>\n

    The BEAMS Initiative was launched by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change<\/span> under the ICZM (Integrated Coastal Zone Management) project.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Objectives: <\/b>The objectives of the BEAMS Initiative is to a<\/span>bate pollution in coastal waters,\u00a0<\/span>promote sustainable development of beach facilities,\u00a0<\/span>protect & conserve coastal ecosystems & natural resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The other objectives include strive and maintain high standards of cleanliness, <\/span>Hygiene & safety for beachgoers in accordance with coastal environment & regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n
