Since then, there has been <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a marked increase of evidence that shows how air pollution affects different aspects of health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, that&#8217;s why these new guidelines recommend new air quality levels to protect the health of populations by reducing levels of key air pollutants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These guidelines are <strong>not legally binding<\/strong>. They are an evidence-informed tool for policy-makers to guide legislation and policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the new guidelines?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new guidelines recommend air quality levels for six pollutants &#8212; particulate matter (PM) 2.5 and PM 10, ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_136343\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-136343\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-136343 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/86441700.jpg.jpg?resize=635%2C599&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/86441700.jpg.jpg?w=635&amp;ssl=1 635w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/86441700.jpg.jpg?resize=300%2C283&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-136343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: TOI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h5><b>What do these guidelines mean for India?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questions have been raised regarding the feasibility of implementing the new guidelines, especially in challenging geo-climatic zones like South Asia, including India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WHO guidelines have sharpened the difference with India\u2019s ambient air quality standards that are in the intermediate category and require revision over time to finally attain the WHO limit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, India\u2019s annual average standard for PM2.5 is 40 \u03bcg \/ m3. That is eight times laxer than the new WHO guidelines. The 24-hour standard is 60 \u03bcg \/ m3, which is four times more lenient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, the annual average standard for PM10 at 60 \u03bcg \/ m3 is four times more lax and the 24-hour standard of 100 \u03bcg \/ m3 is two times more lax than the WHO guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India aligns with the WHO guidelines only in the case of ozone and carbon monoxide, as these have not changed.
