Introduction<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Recently,\u00a0Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) published a report titled \u201cAssessment of Climate Change over the Indian Region\u201d.\u00a0This report reveals that\u00a0<\/span>India has warmed up 0.7\u00b0 C during 1901- 2018<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the findings of the assessment?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>2010-2019 decade was the hottest<\/span><\/b>\u00a0with a mean temperature of 0.36\u00b0 C higher than average.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Heatwaves <\/span><\/b>continued to increase with no signs of diminishing greenhouse gas emissions despite lower activity since the novel coronavirus pandemic.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Prolonged exposure to heat is becoming detrimental to public\u00a0health.\u00a0The poor\u00a0people\u00a0are\u00a0unable to cope up with heat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As per\u00a0the\u00a0assessment,\u00a0India may experience a\u00a04.4\u00b0 C rise<\/strong> by the end of this\u00a0century.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Flooding<\/strong>: Super cyclone \u201cCyclone Amphan\u201d that hit India in 2020, cost monsoon flooding. It caused India\u2019s heaviest monsoon rain in the last 25 years and the world\u2019s seventh costliest. In early 2021, India suffered two more cyclones: <\/span>Cyclone\u00a0Tauktae\u00a0hitting the west coast and Cyclone\u00a0Yaas\u00a0from the east.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the reason behind rising internal displacement of population?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

As per\u00a0Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, India\u2019s\u00a0Internally Displaced Populations\u00a0(IDPs) are rising due to damaging\u00a0climate events<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Heavy rainfall<\/strong>: Uttarakhand’s residents began deserting their homes after the Kedarnath floods in 2013 due to heavy precipitation that increases every year. Uttarakhand is the most affected state. <\/span>Within 2050,\u00a0rainfall is expected to rise by 6%\u00a0and temperature by 1.6\u00b0 C.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Coastal erosion:<\/span><\/b> India lost about 235 sq km to coastal erosion due to climate change induced sea-level rise, land erosion and natural disasters such as tropical cyclones between 1990-2016. This led to displacement. Around\u00a03.9 million displaced in 2020 alone, mostly due\u00a0to Cyclone\u00a0Amphan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Droughts<\/strong>: India\u2019s Deccan plateau faced severe droughts in the 21st century. Maharashtra and Karnataka are the most affected.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some steps that India has taken to tackle the climate change?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

– <\/strong>India held the top 10 position for the second year in a row in 2020\u2019s Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI). The country received credit under all of the CCPI\u2019s performance fields except renewable energy where India performed medium.<\/p>\n

– <\/strong>India vowed to work with COP21 by signing the Paris Agreement to limit global warming and submitted the Nationally Determined Contributions<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>(NDCs).<\/p>\n

– <\/strong>India cofounded with France at COP21, in 2015, the International Solar Alliance (ISA)<\/a><\/strong><\/span> which aims at mobilizing USD1 trillion in investments for the deployment of solar energy at affordable prices by 2030.<\/p>\n

What are the issues with India’s global alliances and policies regarding climate change?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Despite leading ISA, India performed the least in renewable energy according to the CCPI\u2019s performance of India<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The problem<\/strong>: The question is, are these global alliances and world-leading policies being practised or are merely big promises with little implementation?<\/p>\n

India\u00a0is not\u00a0fully compliant<\/strong> with the Paris\u00a0Agreement\u2019s long-term temperature goal of the NDCs. There are\u00a0risks of falling short of the 2\u00b0 C\u00a0goal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To achieve the Paris Agreement\u2019s\u00a0NDC target, India needs to produce 25 million-30 million hectares of forest cover by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In reality, India has overpromised on policies and goals which is difficult to deliver.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why\u00a0does\u00a0the\u00a0COP26 matter?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Glasgow COP26 offers India a\u00a0great opportunity to\u00a0implement\u00a0Paris Agreement\u00a0and update NDCs to successfully\u00a0meet the set targets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Being\u00a0an\u00a0influential\u00a0member of COP26, India has the\u00a0ability to improve its global positioning by leading a\u00a0favourable\u00a0climate goal aspiration for the world\u00a0to follow.\u00a0India\u00a0has the opportunity to\u00a0save itself\u00a0from further climate disasters\u00a0and\u00a0be a leader in the path to climate change prevention.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
