It caused India\u2019s heaviest monsoon rain in the last 25 years and the world\u2019s seventh costliest. In early 2021, India suffered two more cyclones: <\/span>Cyclone\u00a0Tauktae\u00a0hitting the west coast and Cyclone\u00a0Yaas\u00a0from the east.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is the reason behind rising internal displacement of population?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As per\u00a0Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, India\u2019s\u00a0Internally Displaced Populations\u00a0(IDPs) are rising due to <strong>damaging\u00a0climate events<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Heavy rainfall<\/strong>: Uttarakhand&#8217;s residents began deserting their homes after the Kedarnath floods in 2013 due to heavy precipitation that increases every year. Uttarakhand is the most affected state. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Within 2050,\u00a0rainfall is expected to rise by 6%\u00a0and temperature by 1.6\u00b0 C.<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Coastal erosion:<\/span><\/b> India lost about 235 sq km to coastal erosion due to climate change induced sea-level rise, land erosion and natural disasters such as tropical cyclones between 1990-2016. This led to displacement<span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Around\u00a03.9 million displaced in 2020 alone, mostly due\u00a0to Cyclone\u00a0Amphan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Droughts<\/strong>: India\u2019s Deccan plateau faced severe droughts in the 21st century. Maharashtra and Karnataka are the most affected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are some steps that India has taken to tackle the climate change?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>India held the top 10 position for the second year in a row in 2020\u2019s Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI). The country received credit under all of the CCPI\u2019s performance fields except renewable energy where India performed medium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>India vowed to work with COP21 by signing the Paris Agreement to limit global warming and submitted the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/indias-ndc-targets\/\">Nationally Determined Contributions<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>(NDCs).<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>India cofounded with France at COP21, in 2015, the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/international-solar-alliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Solar Alliance (ISA)<\/a><\/strong><\/span> which aims at mobilizing USD1 trillion in investments for the deployment of solar energy at affordable prices by 2030.<\/p>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What are the issues with India&#8217;s global alliances and policies regarding climate change?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Despite leading ISA, <strong>India performed the least in renewable energy according to the CCPI\u2019s performance of India<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The problem<\/strong>: The question is, are these global alliances and world-leading policies being practised or are merely big promises with little implementation?<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">India\u00a0is <strong>not\u00a0fully compliant<\/strong> with the Paris\u00a0Agreement\u2019s long-term temperature goal of the NDCs.
