What is the news?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

As per a study by IISc Bangalore, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) can help India meet its target to create an <\/span>additional carbon sink to the extent of 2.5-3 billion\u00a0tonnes\u00a0equivalent of carbon dioxide by 2030.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

It is possible\u00a0through improved forest and tree cover.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The study calculated carbon sequestration by assessing biomass in plantations and carbon stored in the soil of work sites in villages across the country except for two agro-ecological zones:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/strong>Western Himalayas, Ladakh and north Kashmir<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– <\/strong>Andaman and Nicobar, and Lakshadweep islands<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the findings of the study?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The study illustrated that how MGNREGA scheme is helpful in carbon sequestration. Following are some key findings of the report:<\/p>\n

First<\/b><\/em>,<\/em>\u00a0scheme\u00a0can help\u00a0capture a total carbon of 102 million\u00a0tonnes\u00a0equivalent in 2017-18\u00a0<\/span>through plantations and soil quality improvement works.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>It will increase\u00a0the annual capacity for carbon sequestration to about 249 million\u00a0tonnes\u00a0of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2030.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second,<\/b><\/em>\u00a0drought-proofing activities, including tree plantations, forest restoration and grassland development, captured the maximum carbon. It accounts for a little over 40 per cent of the total carbon sequestration under MGNREGS.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third<\/em>,<\/span><\/b> land development activities, including earthen bunding, stone bunding,\u00a0land leveling\u00a0and minor irrigation\u00a0help in carbon\u00a0sequestration.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fifth<\/span><\/b>, as per one research,\u00a0the activities implemented under MGNREGS\u00a0become very\u00a0important as the forest sector alone may not be able to meet the NDC carbon sink target of 2.5 to 3 billion\u00a0tonnes\u00a0of CO2 by 2030.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are some recommendations?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

First, <\/em><\/span><\/b>i<\/em>ncorporation of tree planting, especially fruit and fodder yielding trees into resource management activities under MGNREGS is recommended. It will generate alternate income and livelihood sources for people while carbon sequestration will be a co-benefit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second<\/em>,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0periodic monitoring and reporting of the carbon sequestration benefits will be required.\u00a0It\u00a0is\u00a0also a requirement for adaptation communication under Article 7 of the Paris Agreement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
