{"id":136934,"date":"2021-09-25T20:12:04","date_gmt":"2021-09-25T14:42:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=136934"},"modified":"2021-09-29T14:38:09","modified_gmt":"2021-09-29T09:08:09","slug":"what-samples-brought-back-by-china-mission-tell-us-about-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-samples-brought-back-by-china-mission-tell-us-about-moon\/","title":{"rendered":"What samples brought back by China mission tell us about Moon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China\u2019s Chang\u2019e-5 lunar mission has delivered to Earth nearly 2 kg of rocky fragments and dust from the Moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the Chang&#8217;e-5 lunar mission?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chang&#8217;e 5 lunar mission is the <strong>Chinese National Space Administration&#8217;s (CNSA)<\/strong> mission to send a robotic spacecraft to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to collect samples and return them to Earth for scientific study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spacecraft landed on an area of the Moon (the \u2018far side\u2019) not sampled by the American or Soviet missions nearly 50 years ago, and thus retrieved fragments of the youngest lunar rocks ever brought back for analysis in laboratories on Earth. The rocks are also different to those returned decades ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the findings from the samples brought by <\/b><b>Chang\u2019e-5?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 90% of the materials collected by Chang\u2019e-5 likely derive from the landing site and its immediate surroundings, which are of a type termed \u2018<strong>mare basalts<\/strong>\u2019. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These volcanic rocks are visible to us as the darker grey areas that spilled over much of the nearside of the Moon as ancient eruptions of lava. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet 10% percent of the fragments have distinctly different, \u2018exotic\u2019 chemical compositions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do these findings matter?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The distinct 10% fragments may preserve records of other parts of the lunar surface, as well as hints of the types of space rocks that have impacted the Moon\u2019s surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, scientists have also looked at the potential sources of beads of rapidly cooled glassy material. They have traced these glassy droplets to <strong>extinct volcanic vents<\/strong> known as <strong>\u2018Rima Mairan\u2019 and \u2018Rima Sharp<\/strong>\u2019.
