Recently,\u00a0<\/span>Copernicus Marine Environmental Monitoring Service published a report \u201cThe Ocean State Report 5\u201d<\/span><\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

As per the report the\u00a0<\/span>global ocean covers 71% of the Earth\u2019s surface<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and regulates the Earth\u2019s climate and sustains life. Currently, global ocean\u00a0is undergoing severe changes from natural variations, over-exploitation and anthropogenic influences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These changes caused the sea level<\/strong> to rise by 3.1 millimeters each year on an average from January 1993 through May 2020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the findings of the report?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First<\/b><\/em>,\u00a0warming ocean waters have caused many marine species to move towards cooler waters. This migration has led to the introduction of non-native and invasive species to different marine ecosystems.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Second<\/b><\/em>, increasing temperatures in the eastern Mediterranean basin saw the lionfish (Pterois miles) entering the Mediterranean Sea from the Suez Canal to the Ionian Sea.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Third<\/em>,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0a\u00a0series of strong Acqua Alta (high water) events occurred in Venice in 2019. It was due to an\u00a0unusually high mean sea level, a high spring tide and extreme local and regional weather conditions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fourth<\/b><\/em>,<\/em> around 50% of Earth\u2019s oxygen production takes place in the ocean, sustaining marine life cycles. This is threatened by growing human activities leading to climate change and eutrophication. This deoxygenates the oceans and seas and has adverse consequences on the marine life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fifth<\/strong><\/em>, In the\u00a0Arctic, sea ice is steadily decreasing; in September 2019, sea ice followed a decreasing trend of -12.89 per cent per decade \u2014 a record low in sea ice extent in the last two years.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong><\/span>: Eutrophication<\/strong> is the enrichment of a lake or other water body with chemical nutrients, typically compounds containing nitrogen, phosphorus, or both.<\/em><\/p>\n
