As it is reaching near, the global community is calling for India to do more tow\u00adards green energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are some key issues\/facts wrt climate change scenario in India?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><b>Dependence on thermal sources: <\/b>India has made remarkable gains in renewable energy. The share of solar, wind, biomass in total installed power capacity has increased from 1.2 per cent to 24.7 per cent between 2001 and 2021.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, in terms of energy production, India mainly depends on thermal sources. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>In 2019, <strong>thermal energy<\/strong> (coal, natural gas and oil) accounted for <strong>76%<\/strong> of total production. The share of hydro was 17%. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hence, India needs to do more. While 87 countries have revised their nationally determined contributions, India is yet to do so. The country is also yet to announce a net-zero target.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">India needs more resources:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to achieve\u00a0$400 billion worth of investment by 2030, India needs\u00a0to step up and commit more resources.\u00a0It also\u00a0needs to revive the\u00a0wind and solar\u00a0sector to increase the capacity from both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f\u00a0capa\u00adcity additions do not keep pace, India <strong>will miss its 2022 target<\/strong> for renewable expansion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>A<strong> below 2 <sup>o<\/sup>C increase<\/strong> in tempera\u00adtures by 2100 would erode <strong>2.6%<\/strong> of India\u2019s GDP<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> if<strong> temperatures rise to 4 <sup>o<\/sup>C<\/strong>, the GDP reduction would be six times more at <strong>13.4%<\/strong>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><b>Services sector will bear the brunt: <\/b>India stands to lose $35 trillion by 2070, if tempera\u00adtures rise by 3 degrees Celsius. A significant damage would be borne by the services sector, which would witness an economic loss of $11 trillion.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>India as the private sector is taking the lead<\/strong> in green energy. Adani Group recently announced that it would make $20 billion worth of investment in green energy within the next 10 years.
