It was named Rakthamichthys Mumba \u2013 the Mumbai blind eel. This is the fifth species from the genus to be described from India.<\/p>\n<p>Also, this is the first completely blind subterranean freshwater fish species to be described from Maharashtra and the Northern western Ghats.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 661px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn.downtoearth.org.in\/library\/large\/2021-09-30\/0.24553900_1633004904_20210930_132210-%281%29.jpg?resize=661%2C421&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"New eel species discovered in Mumbai well. Unlike other species of its genus, the mumba lacks eyes, fins and scales.<\/p>\n<p>Rakthamichthys mumba differs from its congener from Western Ghats of India by the possession of jaws-projecting forward equally, when viewed laterally, absence of eyes and having more vertebrae.<\/p>\n<p>The present known habitat of the species is only the Mumbai well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: This post is based on the article \u201c<strong>New eel species discovered in Mumbai well<\/strong>\u201d published in <strong>Down to Earth<\/strong> on <strong>1st Oct 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the news?
