Indian drugmakers are preparing to play a key role in the global scale-up of the oral covid-19 drug\u00a0<\/span>molnupiravir.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0It is termed\u00a0to be the first antiviral to treat the\u00a0disease.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How the drug is beneficial?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The experimental drug reduced the\u00a0risk of hospitalization or death by 50% in an interim trial.\u00a0Afterwards it has been\u00a0decided to stop trials and seek emergency approval from the US drug\u00a0regulator.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike a vaccine, there is really no limitation to scale up the\u00a0manufacturing of this drug as the chemical process to produce it is simple.\u00a0We are also in discussions with not-for-profit organizations such as UNITAID,\u00a0UNICEF for a possible supply agreement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the status of drug approval in India and how it is useful?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Next month, at least three Indian drugmakers will seek approval from the drug\u00a0regulator following the completion of their own clinical trials for the drug in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

An approval will help in the global scale-up of the\u00a0drug, especially in low- and middle-income countries.\u00a0In India, there are 12 companies that are running clinical trials for this drug.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
