Nobel Prize for physics\u00a02021\u00a0has been awarded to scientists<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b> Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann, and Giorgio Parisi.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>This is the first time\u00a0climate scientists have been awarded\u00a0the\u00a0Physics Nobel.<\/p>\n

Manabe and Hasselmann <\/span><\/b>were cited for their\u00a0<\/span>work\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>\u201cthe physical modeling of Earth\u2019s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming\u201d.<\/p>\n

Manabe\u00a0<\/span><\/b>demonstrated\u00a0<\/span>how\u00a0an\u00a0increase\u00a0in the amount of carbon dioxide\u00a0in the atmosphere would\u00a0increase global temperatures, laying the foundations for current climate models.<\/p>\n

Hasselmann\u00a0<\/span><\/b>created a\u00a0<\/span>model\u00a0that\u00a0linked weather and climate, which helps us to explain why climate models can be reliable despite the seemingly chaotic nature of the weather.<\/p>\n

Giorgio Parisi <\/span><\/b>“built a\u00a0<\/span>deep physical and mathematical model\u201d\u00a0to understand complex systems in different\u00a0fields\u00a0–\u00a0These are systems with a very high degree of randomness; weather and climate phenomena are examples of complex systems.<\/p>\n

What is the significance?<\/h5>\n

This Nobel Prize would probably help in further mainstreaming climate science<\/span>. Further, it will also <\/span>convince people and <\/span>governments, that are not convinced of the reality<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of the interconnectedness of anthropogenic activities and climate change.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
