Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change has started\u00a0two days\u00a0<\/span>Online Meeting of\u00a0<\/span>Central Asian Flyway<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(CAF)\u00a0<\/span>Range countries<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to strengthen the conservation actions <\/span>for migratory birds<\/span><\/b> and their habitats in the Central Asian Flyway.<\/span><\/p>\n Flyways<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A flyway\u00a0is a geographical region within which a single or a group of migratory species completes its annual cycle \u2013 breeding, moulting, staging and non-breeding.<\/p>\n According to\u00a0India\u2019s\u00a0\u201c<\/span>National Action Plan<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(NAP) for Conservation of Migratory birds<\/strong>\u201d,\u00a0at least 370 species of migratory bird from\u00a0<\/span>3 flyways\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(CAF, East Asian Australasian Flyway and Asian East African Flyway) are reported to visit the Indian sub-continent during their annual cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n What is Central Asian Flyway (CAF)?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Central Asian Flyway (CAF)\u00a0covers a large area of Eurasia between the Arctic and Indian Oceans.<\/span>\u00a0It is one of the nine most important flyways of migratory birds around the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Including India, there are 30 countries under the Central Asian Flyway.\u00a0It extends from the northernmost breeding grounds in the Russian Federation<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(Siberia) <\/span><\/b>to\u00a0the southernmost non-breeding (wintering) grounds in West and South Asia<\/strong>, the Maldives<\/strong> and British Indian Ocean Territory<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Approximately one in five of the world’s 11,000 bird species migrate, some covering enormous distances. Conserving migratory birds requires cooperation and coordination along the entire flyway between countries and across national boundaries.<\/p>\n Safeguarding flyways means protecting the\u00a0birds from\u00a0poachers,\u00a0rejuvenating wetlands\u00a0among\u00a0others. Saving<\/span> the wetlands, terrestrial habitats\u00a0help\u00a0in\u00a0fulfilling the bigger purpose of\u00a0saving an\u00a0ecosystem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Convention on Migratory Species (CMS)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>or the Bonn Convention:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>It is an intergovernmental treaty, concluded under the aegis of UNEP. It was signed in 1979 in Bonn, Germany<\/strong>, and entered into force in 1983<\/strong>.
