A recent analysis by the<\/span>\u00a0Banaras Hindu University (BHU),\u00a0<\/span>in collaboration with\u00a0the Department of Science and\u00a0Technology(<\/strong><\/span>DST<\/span><\/b>) and the Ministry of Earth Sciences(<\/strong><\/span>MoES<\/strong>)<\/strong>, has found a spatial <\/span>shift of heatwaves in India. With this shift weather events are now occurring in new regions in the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About the study<\/b><\/h5>\n

The study has looked at temperature data from the India Meteorological Department<\/strong>, spanning 65 years from 1951-2016, to assess the monthly, seasonal, decadal and long-term trends in heatwaves in the country. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the key findings of the study?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The study has found a<\/span>\u00a0warming pattern over northwestern and southern India<\/span><\/b>, while a\u00a0<\/span>progressive cooling phase over northeastern and southwest regions<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The study found three prominent heatwave prone regions \u2014 northwestern, central, and south-central India, with the <\/span>highest being in west Madhya Pradesh<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(0.80 events\/year).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The study has also found a significant decrease in heatwaves over the eastern region, that is Gangetic West Bengal (\u22120.13events\/year).<\/p>\n

The study has also found severe heatwave events have shown a \u201csouthward expansion and a spatial surge during the decades of 2001\u20132010 and 2010\u20132016\u201d. <\/span>The increase in heatwaves in Karnataka<\/strong> and Tamil Nadu<\/strong> are particularly significant and will increase in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Heat Wave<\/span><\/b> is a period of abnormally high temperatures, more than the normal maximum temperature, that occurs during summer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
