Why is there a global chip fight?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

This tussle is mainly led by two countries, the US and China<\/strong>. On the one hand where the US controls the IP, design and technology, China<\/strong>, on the other hand, is the largest chip buyer, consuming 60% of all chips produced globally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The US, using export control laws in 2019, stopped its firms from helping Huawei (a China-based company) to restrict the export of design, fabrication among other technologies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are its impacts on the world\u2019s geopolitics?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

US has pressurised Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and others not to make chips for China. As, this step will cripple Chinese electronics and the advanced technology industry, China responded by violating Taiwanese airspace many times this year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the reasons India should not involve in chip-making?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Investment<\/span><\/b>–\u00a0Chip fabrication facilities (fabs) are not a one-time investment.it needs huge annual investment as electronics\u00a0technology is fast changing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chipmakers like Intel, TSMC each spends over $20 billion in R&D, process improvement and new fabrication machinery every year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Technology-\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Fab technology is complex with very high failure rates. China is a case in point that even significant investments are no guarantee of success.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

World’s fab capacity<\/span><\/b>– World will soon have surplus fab capacity. The US-China rivalry has spurred large investment in new fabs. The US government will spend $50 billion on chip manufacturing. Intel, TSMC is also spending huge on new fabrication technologies. Many other proposals are being discussed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

India should focus on other things in the\u00a0<\/span>chip value chain except for fabrication<\/span><\/b>. These contribute to 40% of the value chain revenue.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chip\u00a0<\/span>design and assembling, testing, and packaging<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(ATP) are the two segments of interest for India.\u00a0Chip design involves using software tools to simulate the physics of chip circuitry.\u00a0India\u00a0may leverage this skill set.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The US which is a major player in semiconductors is seeking <\/span>allies\u00a0<\/span><\/b>to develop a new supply chain, excluding China. India being an active Quad member, must participate in the fabless segment of the chip value chain.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the\u00a0advantages for India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The ATP industry generates millions of\u00a0<\/span>jobs\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and has\u00a0<\/span>low barriers<\/span><\/b> to entry. Besides, it will give a push to\u00a0<\/span>Digital India<\/span><\/b>\u00a0mission,\u00a0<\/span>Make in India<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and the skilled manpower it will create.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
