Meghalaya government has claimed that a detoxing project through the use of <\/span>phycoremediation\u00a0<\/span><\/b>has rejuvenated Lukha river. The project was funded by the \u201cDistrict Mineral Fund\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the reason for contamination?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The Lukha River was considered toxic beyond redemption a decade ago. Meghalaya’s pollution control board in its report blamed drainage from \u2018<\/span>acid mines\u2019<\/span><\/b>\u00a0drainage\u00a0and\u00a0\u2018rat-hole\u00a0<\/span>coal mines\u2019<\/span><\/b>\u00a0as the reason for toxicity in the river.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, the government used the Phycoremediation method to detoxify the river.<\/p>\n

What is\u00a0phycoremediation?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

It is a type of <\/span>bioremediation<\/span><\/b>, can be defined in a broader sense as the\u00a0<\/span>use of macroalgae<\/span><\/b>\u00a0or microalgae for the removal or biotransformation of pollutants.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It improves the\u00a0<\/span>PH\u00a0<\/span><\/b>of the water.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About Lukha river<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n

It drains the southern part of \u2018East Jaintia hills\u2019(Meghalaya). It is fed by its major tributary \u2018The Lunar River\u2019 and streams from \u2018Narpuh reserve forest’.<\/span><\/p>\n

The river passes into southern Assam\u2019s Barak Valley and ends up in the floodplains of Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

What is\u00a0District Mineral Fund?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DMFs were instituted under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation)<\/span>\u00a0(MMDR) Amendment Act 2015.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They are non-profit trusts to work for the interest and benefit of <\/span>persons and areas affected by mining<\/span><\/b>-related operations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
