Introduction<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

As per the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report of 2019<\/strong>, India improved from 65th position in 2013 to 34th position in 2019. However, the Indian tourism and hospitality sector was adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and saw substantial job loss.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why does India need to focus on the tourism sector?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

As per the estimates of the erstwhile \u201c<\/span>Planning Commission<\/span><\/b>\u201d, an investment of \u20b91 million generates 78\u00a0<\/span>jobs\u00a0<\/span><\/b>in the tourism sector. In the manufacturing sector, it results in just 18 jobs and in the agriculture sector, it is 45.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0growth in this sector has multiplier\u00a0effects on<\/span>\u00a0income generation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0as it is\u00a0employment-intensive with\u00a0<\/span>less capital\u00a0investment<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and that too without any industrial gestation period.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0India Skill Report,\u00a02019<\/span><\/b>, estimates the Indian workforce to increase to about 600 million by 2022, from the current 473 million. In light of these facts, the tourism sector has the potential to absorb some new entrant workforce.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u00a0steps does the government of\u00a0India\u00a0has taken?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

During the pre-pandemic period<\/strong>: Many initiatives were adopted to promote the tourism sector, such as providing e-visas under various categories for people from particular countries, Global Media Campaigns, the Heritage Trail and the Paryatan Parv celebration.<\/p>\n

During the Pandemic<\/strong>:\u00a0 The government announced financial support for more than 11,000 registered tourist guides\/travel and tourism stakeholders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It also said once international\u00a0travel resumes, the\u00a0first\u00a0five\u00a0lakh tourists\u00a0will be issued visas free of\u00a0charge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How India’s tourism sector can improve further?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Though these measures are commendable, India needs other long-term measures too, to tap the potential of this sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India needs a groundbreaking innovation strategy<\/strong> that has the potential to create employment opportunities and increase revenue through private sector growth.<\/span> For that, support from the government for ideation and access to\u00a0finance<\/b>\u00a0are required.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a need to <\/span>train<\/span><\/b> the workforce in India so that workers can develop the <\/span>skills\u00a0<\/span><\/b>to perform jobs in the\u00a0travel and tourism sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0international\u00a0arrivals<\/span><\/b>\u00a0have remained comparatively\u00a0low, at around 9 to 10 million.\u00a0Thus, there is a need to highlight the\u00a0significance\u00a0of public-private partnership\u00a0to\u00a0improve\u00a0<\/span>infrastructure<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and tackle the problem of\u00a0<\/span>end connectivity<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0which negatively\u00a0affect\u00a0the\u00a0experiences of international\u00a0travellers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The travel and tourism industry\u00a0in India is also fragmented, hindering\u00a0the ability of the sector to achieve its\u00a0potential. This area needs to be worked upon.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India should take a cue from <\/span>best practices<\/span><\/b> across the world, especially with regard to the use of\u00a0<\/span>technology<\/span><\/b>. There are examples worldwide on blockchain-based money solutions to kick-start local tourism industries.<\/span><\/p>\n
