World Health Organization (WHO) released \u201cGlobal TB report<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0which\u00a0stated that\u00a0the world suffered huge reverses in progress towards tuberculosis (TB) elimination in 2020, due to COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0India has been the worst-hit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the key findings of the report?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Detection of new cases-<\/span><\/b>The biggest impact was felt in terms of\u00a0detection of new cases.\u00a0From 2016-2019, the number of new cases rose continuously, but\u00a0<\/span>fell to 20%\u00a0in 2020<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0This was due to cases going undetected because of lack of access during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India\u00a0<\/span><\/b>contributed the biggest drop in detection of new cases. Some<\/span>\u00a041%<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of the total number of cases that dropped in 2020, as compared to 2019, came from India.\u00a0<\/span>From 2013-19,\u00a0the gap between the people actually infected and correctly diagnosed with the TB decreased\u00a0continuously<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0India and Indonesia were the biggest contributors to this achievement. Now, these very countries are the two biggest laggards.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Increase in TB deaths-\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Overall, the deaths have gone back to the level of 2017.people dying with TB\u00a0without\u00a0HIV co-infection\u00a0and those who suffered with HIV co-infection registered\u00a0increased number of deaths in 2020.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Death globally-\u00a0<\/span><\/b>TB was ranked the 13th leading cause of\u00a0death till\u00a02019. Because of the huge setbacks, it is now estimated to be the second leading cause, only after COVID-19.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drug-resistant TB-\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Number of people provided\u00a0with\u00a0treatment\u00a0for drug-resistant TB\u00a0went down by 15 per cent in 2020, as compared to the previous year. However, the burden of multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) remained\u00a0stable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Report\u00a0includes\u00a0both supply- and demand-side disruptions to TB diagnostic and treatment services.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A large number of cases went undetected due to highly curtailed access to diagnostics and restrictions imposed to contain the pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reduced health system capacity to continue to provide services.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Less willingness and ability to seek care in the context of lockdowns and associated restrictions on movement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Concerns about the risks of going to healthcare facilities during\u00a0the\u00a0pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stigma associated with similarities in the symptoms related to TB and COVID-19.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0are\u00a0the\u00a0milestone\u00a0targets on TB\u00a0to be achieved?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

\u2018End TB Strategy\u2019 milestones<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TB disease burden-\u00a0<\/span><\/b>A\u00a035%\u00a0reduction in the number of TB deaths\u00a0by 2020\u00a0was the target. However, the global reduction in the corresponding time period has only been 9.2 per cent.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TB incidence rate-\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Strategy aimed to reduce the TB incidence rate to 20%\u00a0by 2020, as compared with the levels in 2015. But the target achieved till 2020 was only 11%.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Preventive treatment-<\/span><\/b>\u00a0People suffering from conditions that make them vulnerable to TB, particularly an HIV infection, are also provided preventive treatment.\u00a0This segment\u00a0also\u00a0saw a\u00a0<\/span>decline.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is\u00a0the\u00a0expected\u00a0future\u00a0trend?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Due to spillover effects, the\u00a0years\u00a02021 and 2022 can see further deterioration in TB condition.\u00a0TB mortality in 2021 is projected to be much higher than in 2020 in all of the 16 countries that accounted for almost all of the global drop in TB notifications.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To improve the diagnosis, the report said countries need to increase testing through bacteria culture or rapid tests. The share of rapid tests especially needs to go up as only 33 per cent of total cases were diagnosed through it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
