Introduction<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The\u00a0Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (<\/span>IPCC<\/span><\/b>) has recently published its\u00a0<\/span>Sixth Assessment Report<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0Working Group\u00a0of the report has\u00a0strongly expressed demand for climate action.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is there a need for action?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Globally:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>According to the IPCC report, the past decade (2011-2020) was warmer by 1.09\u00b0C than the period from 1850 to 1900, and the1.5\u00b0C global warming threshold is likely to be breached soon.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

India specific crisis<\/span><\/b>– IPCC report warns\u00a0India against\u00a0more intense heat waves, heavy monsoons and rise in weather extremes in the future.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Global Climate Risk Index (2021<\/span><\/b>) ranked India the seventh-most affected country\u00a0by weather\u00a0extremes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the actions taken by India for \u2018mitigation\u2019 of the climate crisis?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

India is targeting 450 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and it has launched mega solar and green hydrogen missions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Shoonya\u00a0programme\u00a0by\u00a0NITI Aayog, which aims to accelerate adoption of electric vehicles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the need of the hour?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Initiatives such as National Action Plan on Climate Change\u00a0(<\/span>NAPCC<\/span><\/b>) and the \u2018<\/span>National Adaptation Fund\u2019<\/span><\/b>\u00a0has been taken among others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A breakthrough on adaptation\u00a0and\u00a0resilience\u00a0actions\u00a0is\u00a0needed to save developmental gains and adjust to new climate conditions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0<\/span>development-centric approach<\/span><\/b>\u00a0that aligns climate change, food security, and livelihood perspectives and takes into consideration regional specificities is crucial for reducing poverty and distress migrations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0are\u00a0the steps needed to be taken by India?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

High-quality meteorological data:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>With improved early warning systems and forecasting,\u00a0the crisis\u00a0can be tackled\u00a0better. Premier research\u00a0institutes can\u00a0be roped in to develop regional climate projections for robust risk assessments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Well-functioning markets:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0For sustainable production systems, it is necessary to develop well-functioning markets\u00a0for environmentally friendly products and disseminate them for the\u00a0desired\u00a0behavioural\u00a0change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Private sector participation:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0For investment in\u00a0adaptation technologies\u00a0and for designing and implementing innovative climate services and\u00a0solutions in\u00a0areas such as agriculture, health, infrastructure, insurance and risk management.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a\u00a0need to\u00a0<\/span>protect mangroves and forests<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to address climate-related risks by\u00a0blending traditional\u00a0knowledge with scientific evidence and encourage local and non-state actors\u00a0to actively\u00a0participate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Social protection schemes\u00a0<\/span><\/b>should be climate-sensitive to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>enhance the\u00a0adaptive capacity\u00a0of rural households.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Effective feedback mechanisms-\u00a0<\/span><\/b>for continuous monitoring and evaluation,\u00a0effective feedback\u00a0mechanisms must be developed for mid-course correction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A more collaborative approach towards climate change adaptation is crucial. Adaptation planning requires governance at different levels to understand, plan, coordinate, integrate and act to reduce vulnerability and exposure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
