The farm is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only nine square kilometres in area and about one-hundredth of the size of Manas. Yet as many as 25 Bengal floricans have been seen there at one time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, Land-use changes at the site and the plan to convert the farm into a university campus is posing a threat to the Bengal Florican.<\/p>\n<p><b>About Bengal Floricans<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141807\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141807\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-141807 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/440px-BengalFlorican.jpg?resize=300%2C286&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/440px-BengalFlorican.jpg?resize=300%2C286&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/440px-BengalFlorican.jpg?w=440&amp;ssl=1 440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Wikipedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bengal floricans (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houbaropsis bengalensis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are also called Bengal bustards. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They inhabit lowland dry, or seasonally inundated, natural and semi-natural grasslands often interspersed with scattered scrub or patchy open forest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Found in: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The species is found in very small numbers in <strong>India<\/strong> and <strong>Cambodia<\/strong>. About a hundred of them are present in <strong>Nepal<\/strong>, and the species is extinct in <strong>Bangladesh<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>India:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, the species habitat lies in the floodplains of the country\u2019s two largest rivers, the <strong>Ganga<\/strong> and the <strong>Brahmaputra<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In the Ganga floodplains,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bengal floricans are found in the state of <strong>Uttar Pradesh<\/strong> at places like the Dudhwa and Pilibhit Tiger Reserve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In the Brahmaputra delta,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the species is found in Jaldapara National Park in West Bengal, Kaziranga and Manas National Parks in Assam and the D\u2019Ering Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IUCN Status:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Critically Endangered<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Indian Wildlife Protection Act,1972:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Schedule-I<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Convention on Migratory<\/b><b> Species(CMS): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appendix 1<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Threats:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The populations are in decline and threatened by <\/span><b>habitat loss through drainage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, conversion to agricultural land and plantations, the invasion of alien species, and dam construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>Development projects threaten Bengal florican habitat in Assam<\/b><b>\u201d <\/b>published in <b>Down To Earth<\/b> on<b> 18th October 2021.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
