During this time, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arctic sea ice reflects sunlight away from Earth\u2019s surface, keeping temperatures cool.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when it melts in the summer, Arctic oceans absorb the sunlight instead, causing oceans to warm and temperatures to rise. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This results in a rich marine ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in some parts of the Arctic, such as the \u201c<\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-is-the-arctics-last-ice-area-that-is-now-showing-signs-of-melting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Last Ice Area<\/a>\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 a vast area north of Canada and Greenland \u2014 sea ice has historically thrived year-round instead of melting during the summer, providing a vital habitat for ice-dependent animals like seals and polar bears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with a warming climate, summer sea ice has been shrinking fast and now consistently spans less than half the area it did in the early 1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What are the findings of the study?\u00a0<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study covered the <\/span><b>Last Ice Area <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where sea ice has traditionally been the thickest round the year and is thus likely to be most resilient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Based on this area, the study has looked at two scenarios:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Optimistic Scenario:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> During this, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon emissions are immediately and drastically curbed to prevent the worst global warming. This could result in a limited portion of the ice surviving in the region. At <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">least some seals, bears and other creatures may survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pessimistic Scenario:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> During this scenario, emissions continue at their current rate of increase and the summer ice <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would disappear by the end of the century<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
