{"id":141843,"date":"2021-10-19T18:23:54","date_gmt":"2021-10-19T12:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=141843"},"modified":"2021-10-22T18:00:18","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T12:30:18","slug":"improving-livestock-breeding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/improving-livestock-breeding\/","title":{"rendered":"Improving livestock breeding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Synopsis<\/strong>: The facts and schemes relating to different livestock sector and the expected benefit out of it.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Livestock breeding in India has been largely unorganised because of which there have been gaps in forward and backward integration across the value chain.<\/p>\n<p>Government has revised &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/initiatives-launched-under-rashtriya-gokul-mission\/\">Rashtriya Gokul Mission<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8221; and &#8220;<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/national-livestock-mission-nlm\/\">National Livestock Mission<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&#8221; (NLM) to adress issues in this sector.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the facts regarding Livestock sector and its impact?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Facts<\/strong>-Approximately 200 million Indians are involved in livestock farming, including around 100 million dairy farmers. Roughly 80% bovines in the country are low on productivity and are reared by small and marginal farmers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact<\/strong>-It impacts the quality of livestock that is produced and in turn negatively impacts the return on investment for livestock farmers.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What steps are taken by Government to improve &#8216;Livestock sector&#8217; and its &#8216;farmers&#8217;?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>To enhance the productivity of cattle, the &#8220;<strong>Rashtriya Gokul Mission<\/strong>&#8221; was initiated in 2014 with a focus on the genetic upgradation of the bovine population through widespread initiatives on artifi\u0081cial insemination, sex-sorted semen, and in-vitro fertilization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>Web applications like <strong>e-Gopala<\/strong> that provide real-time information to livestock farmers on the availability of disease-free germplasm in relevant centres, veterinary care, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; <\/strong>The <strong>revised<\/strong> version of the &#8220;Rashtriya Gokul Mission&#8221;(<strong>RGM<\/strong>) and &#8220;National Livestock Mission&#8221; (<strong>NLM<\/strong>) incentivises <strong>entrepreneurship development<\/strong> and breed improvement in cattle, buff\u008dalo, poultry, sheep, goat, and piggery by providing incentives to individual entrepreneurs, farmer producer organisations, SHG&#8217;s, companies(section 8) among others.<\/p>\n<p>State governments would be given incentive for breed improvement <strong>infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Components under revised &#8220;RGM&#8221; and &#8220;NLM&#8221;:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Breed multiplication<\/strong> farm component of &#8220;RGM&#8221;-provide for capital subsidy up to \u20b9\u008f200 lakh for setting up breeding farm with at least 200 milch cows\/ buff\u008dalo using latest breeding technology.<\/p>\n<p>Breed multiplication farm is expected to result in the employment of 1 lakh farmers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poultry entrepreneurship<\/strong> programme of the NLM-capital subsidy up to \u20b9\u008f25 lakh for setting up of a parent farm with a capacity to rear 1,000 chicks.The rural entrepreneur running the hatchery will be supplying chicks to the farmers for further rearing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sheep and goat<\/strong> entrepreneurship, there is a provision of capital subsidy of 50% up to 50 lakh.<\/p>\n<p>Each entrepreneur will get animals with high genetic merit from the Central\/State government university farms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For piggery<\/strong>, the NLM will provide 50% capital subsidy of up to \u20b9\u008f30 lakh.<\/p>\n<p>The revised scheme of &#8216;NLM&#8217; coupled with the <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Rashtriya Gokul Mission<\/strong> <\/span>and the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund has the potential to dramatically enhance the <strong>productivity<\/strong> and traceability standards of our livestock besides it has huge potential for <strong>employment generation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> This post is based on the article \u201c<strong>Improving livestock breeding<\/strong>\u201d published in &#8220;<strong>The Hindu<\/strong>&#8221; on <strong>19th October 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Synopsis: The facts and schemes relating to different livestock sector and the expected benefit out of it.
