{"id":142377,"date":"2021-10-21T19:40:13","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T14:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=142377"},"modified":"2021-10-25T09:14:20","modified_gmt":"2021-10-25T03:44:20","slug":"by-2030-early-warnings-on-floods-and-droughts-to-be-available-for-all-wmo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/by-2030-early-warnings-on-floods-and-droughts-to-be-available-for-all-wmo\/","title":{"rendered":"By 2030, early warnings on floods and droughts to be available for all: WMO"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Source<\/strong>: This post is based on the article \u201c<strong>By 2030, early warnings on floods and droughts to be available for all: WMO<\/strong>\u201d published in &#8220;<strong>Down to Earth<\/strong>&#8221; on <strong>20th October 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the news?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>At the ongoing World Meteorological Congress, World Meteorological Congress has endorsed the \u2018<strong>Water Declaration<\/strong>\u2019, wherein early warnings about floods and droughts will be available for people everywhere on the planet by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The Congress also endorsed <strong>the Water and Climate Coalition<\/strong> for promoting sharing and access to integrated hydrological, cryosphere, meteorological and climate information.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the significance of such a declaration?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The formation of the Coalition is significant at a time when just 40% of countries globally have operational early flood and drought warning systems.<\/p>\n<p>The endorsements at the Congress are significant as <strong>more than half of the world\u2019s population will be living under water-stressed conditions by 2030<\/strong>, according to the WMO, and will be more vulnerable to water-related disasters especially cyclones, floods.<\/p>\n<p>Also, some 60% of WMO member countries lack hydrological monitoring capabilities, according to the organisation. Globally, <strong>more than three billion people have no quality management system for their water-related data<\/strong> in place.<\/p>\n<p>This means close to half of the world\u2019s population is at risk due to a lack of information on the state of their water resources including rivers, lakes, groundwater, according to the most recent UN estimates.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the expected benefits?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Some 107 countries are not on track to have sustainably managed water resources. Water and Climate Coalition aimed at <strong>accelerating the progress of water-related United Nations Sustainable Development Goals<\/strong>, especially SDG-6 (water and sanitation for all).<\/p>\n<p>The coalition is thus, aims to boost resilient water adaptation to climate change as well as demographic and socio-economic development for the future.<\/p>\n<p>Also, it will contribute to the new Sustainability Strategy for strengthening the Flash Flood Guidance System with Global Coverage (FFGS\/WGC) approved at the World Meteorological Congress.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source: This post is based on the article \u201cBy 2030, early warnings on floods and droughts to be available for all: WMO\u201d published in &#8220;Down to Earth&#8221; on 20th October 2021.
