The Union Minister visited<\/span> the Indian Subcontinent\u2019s Pioneer Research Vessel, Ship \u201cSagarNidhi\u201d and interacted with the Scientists on the deck.<\/span><\/p>\n Oceanographic Research Vessel(ORV) <\/b>Sagar Nidhi is an ice-strengthened multidisciplinary vessel operated by the <\/span>National Institute of Ocean Technology(NIOT).<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n Note<\/strong>: An ice-strengthened ship is a ship made of steel. These ships are made to get through the ice in Antarctica and the Arctic.<\/p>\n Purpose:<\/b> 1. E<\/span>xploring the ocean resources, 2. Participation in search and rescue operations and in implementation of <\/span>Deep Ocean Mission<\/span><\/a>, 3. Carrying out geoscientific, meteorological and oceanographic research.<\/span><\/p>\n Significance:<\/b> First Indian flagged research ship that reached the Antarctic waters.<\/span><\/p>\n Research Vessel (Ships) <\/b>is an important tool for ocean research and the development of ocean technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has <\/span>at present has 6 ships<\/b> namely Sagar Nidhi, Sagar Manjusha, Sagar Kanya, Sagar Sampada, Sagar Tara and Sagar Anveshika.<\/span><\/p>\n India has an Exclusive Economic Zone<\/a> (EEZ)<\/strong> of about 2.37 million square kilometres wherein India enjoys the exclusive legal right<\/strong> to utilize all living and non-living resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Apart from this, India has been allotted 75000 square kilometres in the Central Indian Ocean and 10000 square kilometres in the Southern Indian Ocean by the International Seabed Authority<\/a>.
