Moreover, the Bill has also brought into focus the practise of matriliny in Meghalaya.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200b<\/span><b>What does matriliny in Meghalaya mean?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three tribes of Meghalaya \u2014 Khasis, Jaintias, and Garos \u2014 practise a matrilineal system of inheritance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this system, lineage and descent are traced through the mother\u2019s clan. In other words, children take the mother\u2019s surname, the husband moves into his wife\u2019s house, and the youngest daughter (<\/span><b>khatduh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of the family is handed over the full share of the ancestral \u2014 or the clan\u2019s \u2014 property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The khatduh becomes the \u201ccustodian\u201d of the land and assumes all responsibility associated with the land, including taking care of aged parents, unmarried or destitute siblings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The khatduh cannot sell the property without the permission of her mother\u2019s brother (maternal uncle).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, this inheritance tradition applies only to ancestral or clan\/community property which has been with the family for years.
