News<\/span><\/b>: In CoP 26 summit,\u00a0105 countries have\u00a0<\/span>pledged<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to reduce their methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels, by 2030.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

IPCC research estimates that 1\/4<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0of global warming is done by CH4 or Methane.\u00a0Cutting Methane emissions is easier compared to other emissions due to tech solutions. Also, UN\u2019s latest assessment is that over 50% of available targeted measures have negative costs \u2013 they quickly end up saving money.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But it is not yet clear that\u00a0industrialized\u00a0meat production system, which\u00a0globally\u00a0accounts for\u00a032% of anthropogenic methane emissions, will be a part\u00a0of reform or not.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What India should do?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

livestock and paddy cultivation, which accounts for 8% of CH4 emissions, is the main reason behind India\u00a0not signing the agreement.\u00a0\u00a0India can use technologies that\u00a0reduce methanogenic activity in bovines and sheep. For example, ICMR\u00a0has developed a feed supplement that cuts down their methane emissions by 17-20%.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Further India can also take a lead in the\u00a0future\u00a0\u201cgreen meats\u201d\u00a0or laboratory meats.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
