The Government of India is planning to set up a <\/span>National Interlinking of Rivers Authority(NIRA).<\/span><\/p>\n NIRA is supposed to be <\/span>an <\/span>independent autonomous body <\/b>for planning, investigation, financing and the implementation of the <\/span>river interlinking projects<\/b> in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n Headed by: <\/b>The authority is to be headed by a Government of India Secretary-rank officer.<\/span><\/p>\n Who will it replace?<\/b> NIRA will replace the existing National Water Development Agency (NWDA).<\/span><\/p>\n Firstly,<\/b> it will coordinate with neighbouring countries and concerned states and departments on river interlinking projects.<\/span><\/p>\n Secondly, <\/b>it will have powers on issues related to the environment, wildlife and forest clearances under river linking projects and their legal aspects.<\/span><\/p>\n Thirdly, <\/b>it will have the power to raise funds and act as a repository of borrowed funds or money received on deposit or loan given on interest.<\/span><\/p>\n Lastly, <\/b>it will also have the power to set up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for individual link projects.<\/span><\/p>\n Source<\/b>: <\/span>This post is based on the article<\/span> \u201c<\/b>Centre proposes setting up new body for river-linking projects in India<\/b>\u201d <\/b>published by <\/span>Indian Express on 16th November 2021.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" What is the News?
