{"id":148100,"date":"2021-11-22T20:51:20","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T15:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=148100"},"modified":"2021-11-22T20:51:20","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T15:21:20","slug":"developed-nations-want-to-expand-wto-agenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/developed-nations-want-to-expand-wto-agenda\/","title":{"rendered":"Developed nations want to expand WTO agenda"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the News?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s Commerce and Industry Minister has said that developed countries linking World Trade Organisation (WTO) reforms with special and differential treatment (S&amp;DT) being provided to poor and developing nations is &#8220;unfair&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is Special and differential treatment (S&amp;DT) under WTO?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WTO agreements contain special provisions which give developing countries special rights and allow other members to treat them more favorably. These are called \u201cspecial and differential treatment provisions\u201d <em>(abbreviated as S&amp;D or SDT)<\/em>. These special provisions include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; longer time periods for implementing agreements and commitments<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; measures to increase trading opportunities for these countries<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; provisions requiring all WTO members to safeguard the trade interests of developing countries<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; support to help developing countries build the infrastructure to undertake WTO work, handle disputes and implement technical standards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Provisions related to least-developed country (LDC) members<\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the problem with S&amp;DT under WTO?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, any WTO member can designate itself as a developing country and avail S&amp;DT\u00a0 benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; As a result of the self-selection process, there is a competition among members to get the developing country status. Several advanced countries have also taken developing country status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, that&#8217;s why the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US had submitted its suggestions to the WTO that states that self-declaration puts the WTO on a path to failed negotiations, and it is also a path to institutional irrelevance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, India<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is of the view that the matter needs to be negotiated comprehensively in the WTO and a consensus-based decision needs to be taken on S&amp;DT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This post is based on the article <\/span><b>\u201c<\/b><b>Developed nations want to expand WTO agenda\u00a0<\/b><b>\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by <\/span><b>TOI <\/b>on<b> 21st Nov 2021.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the News?
