INS Vela has been commissioned by the Indian Navy.<\/span><\/p>\n INS Vela is the fourth submarine in the series of six<\/span> Scorpene-Class submarines <\/span><\/a>being built under <\/span>Project-75.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n Named After: <\/b>Vela is named after a type of Indian fish belonging to the stingray family, and the crest depicts the fish swimming across the blue seas. <\/span>It also carries forward the name of a decommissioned submarine Vela which served the Navy from 1973 to 2010.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Built by:<\/b> Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with M\/s Naval Group(earlier DCNS), France.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Home Base:<\/b> Vela will be commissioned into the Indian Navy\u2019s western command and will be based in Mumbai.<\/span><\/p>\n What are the key features of INS Vela?<\/b><\/p>\n V<\/span>ela is a <\/span>diesel-electric powered attack submarine<\/b> designed to act as \u201csea denial\u201d as well as \u201caccess denial\u201d warfare to the adversary.<\/span><\/p>\n The submarine can engage in <\/span>offensive operations<\/b> across the entire spectrum of naval warfare, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.<\/span><\/p>\n The submarine is also equipped with C303 anti-torpedo countermeasure system and can carry up to 18 torpedoes or Exocet anti-ship missiles or 30 mines in place of torpedoes.<\/span><\/p>\n With this induction, the Navy currently has 16 conventional and one nuclear submarine in service.
