To maintain investments in this field and ensuring supplies, the government resorted to <strong>reducing duty on Covid-critical devices<\/strong> to zero temporarily, which led to a huge influx of imports.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the increase is attributed to imports of critical items like oximeters, diagnostic instruments, digital thermometers and chemical reagents, which were needed during the pandemic as a <strong>quick scale-up wasn\u2019t possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the issues with imports?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>These <strong>harm the domestic industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The nil customs duty did not benefit consumers and, with no MRP printed on devices, there was <strong>massive profiteering<\/strong> due to the huge mark-ups.<\/p>\n<p>Such huge imports are also a <strong>challenge to India&#8217;s \u2018Atma Nirbhar&#8217; policy<\/strong> as private sector procurement largely has not been supporting \u2018Make in India\u2019, with China continuing to be a major supplier.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the way forward?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Centre\u2019s bulk purchases have been mainly restricted to respiratory care and oxygen delivery equipment due to the pandemic. Hence, impetus needs to be given to <strong>build capacity in other segments.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Medtech sector can\u2019t be \u2018Atma Nirbhar\u2019 in a few months.
