The Prime Minister has paid tributes to <\/span>Lachit Borphukan on the occasion of Lachit Divas.<\/span><\/p>\n Note: <\/b>Assam celebrates Lachit Divas on November 24 as a tribute to <\/span>Borphukan <\/span>valour and heroism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Lachit Borphukan was <\/span>a commander in the erstwhile Ahom kingdom<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n He is known for his leadership in the 1671 <\/span>Battle of Saraighat <\/span><\/a>that thwarted an attempt by Mughal forces to capture Assam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The battle of Saraighat was fought on the banks of the Brahmaputra in Guwahati.<\/span><\/p>\n He defeated the Mughal Army by brilliant uses of the terrain, guerrilla tactics, clever diplomatic negotiations to buy time, military intelligence and by exploiting the sole weakness of the Mughal forces\u2014its navy.<\/span><\/p>\n Firstly,<\/em> Lachit Borphukan<\/b> was the inspiration behind strengthening India\u2019s naval force and revitalising inland water transport and creating infrastructure associated with it due to his great naval strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n Secondly,<\/em> The Lachit Borphukan gold medal <\/b>is awarded to the best cadet from the National Defence Academy.The medal was instituted in 1999 to inspire defence personnel to emulate Borphukan\u2019s heroism and sacrifices.<\/span><\/p>\n Source: <\/b>This post is based on the article \u201cPM pays tributes to Lachit Borphukan<\/b>\u201d <\/b>published in TOI <\/b>on 5th Nov 2021.<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" What is the News?
