{"id":149890,"date":"2021-11-30T20:34:09","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=149890"},"modified":"2021-11-30T20:34:09","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:04:09","slug":"reducing-poverty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/reducing-poverty\/","title":{"rendered":"Reducing poverty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News: <\/strong>NITI Aayog has come up with India\u2019s first multi-dimensional poverty index (MPI).<\/p>\n<p>It is a useful report for policymakers and NGO&#8217;s to know about the well-being of Indians on a wider set of indicators other than income.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More about the report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report figured usual states like Bihar, Jharkhand, and UP as India\u2019s poorest states.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/one-out-of-every-two-bihar-households-is-multidimensionally-poor-niti-aayog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NITI report on Poverty<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Indian MPI is based on the same UN\u2019s dimensions of poverty which are health, education, and the standard of living with the weighting of one-third ascribed to each.<\/p>\n<p>However, two additional indicators are placed under health and standard of living in the Indian index which are ante-natal care and bank accounts, respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the problem with new data?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The report reveals that 25% of Indians are multi-dimensionally poor. This is nearly 3% points lower than the UN survey.<\/p>\n<p>This might be because of the above two new indicators introduced, where India has done well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the challenge of sustainability?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The real test of success in reducing multi-dimensional poverty lies in its sustainability.
