It would be made to pay any payouts arising from defamatory comments on its platform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong>: This is a major change in the \u201cunprecedented liability shield\u201d whereby social media platforms have largely escaped the legal implications of content published there.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Why do countries need such laws?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Social media companies spend <strong>resources<\/strong> to fact-check and moderate speech, however, it is extremely <strong>unevenly spread<\/strong> across different countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inadequate efforts<\/strong>: Whatever attempts taken by platforms to identify and suspend anonymous perpetrators, whether via algorithmic or human monitors, it is inadequate to solve the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, countries have begun to look to other paths for tackling the hate and misinformation.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the benefit &amp; challenges of anonymity offered by social media platforms?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Benefit: <\/strong>It has given voice to various marginalised communities, and to dissidents in repressive regimes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenges:<\/strong> In India, anonymous <strong>bullying and harassment<\/strong> is too common on Twitter. Be it journalists or women, threat of life and rape to women is common and ever-present.<\/p>\n<p>The constant contempt and attempt to malice the dignity of someone often<strong> serves political parties.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the stand of India on it and the way forward?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>India&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/new-it-rules-for-social-media-and-its-challenges\/\">intermediary rules<\/a><\/strong> refer to voluntary verification of social media users.
