{"id":150903,"date":"2021-12-04T21:45:39","date_gmt":"2021-12-04T16:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=150903"},"modified":"2021-12-11T18:07:07","modified_gmt":"2021-12-11T12:37:07","slug":"what-the-nfhs-data-reveals-about-inequality-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/what-the-nfhs-data-reveals-about-inequality-in-india\/","title":{"rendered":"What the NFHS data reveals about inequality in India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News: <\/strong>The release of the NFHS data and the NITI Aayog\u2019s study on developing a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/one-out-of-every-two-bihar-households-is-multidimensionally-poor-niti-aayog\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">multidimensional index of poverty<\/span><\/a><\/strong> (MPI) has led to a considerable amount of discussion.<\/p>\n<p>In recent articles, experts have pointed out the existence of regional inequality in development, using many statistics in support of their argument.<\/p>\n<p>However, a <strong>detailed examination <\/strong><em>(by the authors<\/em><em>)<\/em><strong>, of the summary statistics reported in the NFHS data<\/strong> (large and small states of India for the two years 2015-16 and 2019-21) reveals the opposite.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the key changes revealed?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>There has been a remarkable <strong>convergence in living standards<\/strong>, in the space of just five years (2016-2021).<\/p>\n<p>There has been a <strong>large 31% increase in the aggregate level of development,<\/strong> and a very<strong> large decline of 41%, in inequality of development<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Less developed states (BIMARU) have shown higher improvement, which is an evidence in support of <strong>catch-up growth<\/strong>. States such as UP, Bihar and Jharkhand are fast approaching similar standards for select indicators as some of the \u201cdeveloped\u201d states.<\/p>\n<p>This further suggests that<strong> regional imbalances are reducing,<\/strong> and in some indicators, rapidly. For instance, Female empowerment has improved more than 50%.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the reason for such a remarkable convergence in living standards in a span of 5 years?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>It is an outcome of an approach that involves <strong>targeted interventions<\/strong> to improve developmental outcome.
