{"id":150918,"date":"2021-12-04T21:46:56","date_gmt":"2021-12-04T16:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=150918"},"modified":"2021-12-11T18:08:14","modified_gmt":"2021-12-11T12:38:14","slug":"corridors-of-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/corridors-of-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Corridors of death"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News: <\/strong>The recent deaths of Elephants in Tamil Nadu and Assam in train collisions has again highlighted the gaps in efforts to reduce <strong>man-animal conflicts<\/strong> in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 29,964 elephants in India, the majority are in the southern region.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What are the reasons behind it?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Project Elephant division (MoEF&amp;CC) reported <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/1160-elephants-killed-in-a-decade\/\">unnatural killing of 1,160 elephants<\/a><\/strong><\/span> over 11 years ending December 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Railway accidents<\/strong> accounted for 186 cases. <strong>C&amp;AG<\/strong> in its latest compliance audit report on the Ministry of Railways has confirmed greater number of casualties getting reported are in elephant passages.<\/p>\n<p>Other causes being<strong> poaching<\/strong> for 169 and <strong>poisoning<\/strong> for 64 cases of deaths out of 1160.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>What is the way forward?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>To prevent electrocution <\/strong>&#8211; Installing hanging solar-powered fences, as has been planned in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, can help save elephants from electric shock.<\/p>\n<p>-The authorities should ensure that there are no illegal electric fences or barbed wire fences. Instead, it can be replaced with the solar-powered ones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preventing train hits <\/strong>&#8211; Planting &#8216;citronella&#8217; and &#8216;lemon grass&#8217;, as done in Golaghat district (Assam), to deter elephants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Participation of local communities<\/strong> is crucial for conservation of local ecosystem. Everyone, and especially those living close to elephant corridor, must be conveyed the critical role elephants play in biodiversity conservation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eco-corridor<\/strong>: The ministries of Railway, &amp; Environment Ministry must cooperate to quickly complete projects of <strong>elevated-passes <\/strong>(Eco-corridor)<strong> and under-passes <\/strong>for safe wildlife crossings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; C&amp;AG reported that after the construction of underpasses and overpasses in the areas of East Central and Northeast Frontier Railways, there was no death reported.<\/p>\n<p>The authorities should also work upon other <strong>recommendations made by the C&amp;AG.<\/strong> These are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Periodic review of identification of elephant passages<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> More sensitisation programmes for railway staff<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Standardisation of track signage<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211;<\/strong> Installation of an <strong>animal detection system<\/strong> (transmitter collars) and \u2018<strong>honey bee\u2019 sound-emitting devices<\/strong> near all identified elephant passages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong> This post is based on the article \u201c<strong>Corridors of death<\/strong>\u201d published in <strong>The Hindu<\/strong> on <strong>4<sup>th<\/sup> Dec 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News: The recent deaths of Elephants in Tamil Nadu and Assam in train collisions has again highlighted the gaps in efforts to reduce man-animal conflicts in the country.
