{"id":151457,"date":"2021-12-07T20:06:59","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T14:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=151457"},"modified":"2021-12-07T20:06:59","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T14:36:59","slug":"msp-is-no-silver-bullet-to-boost-farmers-income","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/msp-is-no-silver-bullet-to-boost-farmers-income\/","title":{"rendered":"MSP is no silver bullet to boost farmers&#8217; income"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>News: \u00a0<\/strong>Even as the central government has announced its withdrawal of the three farm laws, farmer unions have persisted in their demand to make the minimum support price (MSP) a legal entitlement.<\/p>\n<p>But, <a>even if it becomes a legal right, the MSP, in its current form, is unlikely to resolve the problems of Indian farmers across the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More broad-based measures such as better access to inputs, crop insurance and agro-advisory would be far more beneficial to farmers.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Why legalising MSP cannot resolve India\u2019s farm crisis<\/strong>?<\/h5>\n<p><strong>The issue of quantum of price increase:<\/strong> Over the past 10 years, the compounded annual increase in MSP for most major crops, especially wheat and paddy, has barely matched the rate of general increase in prices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interstate cost variance<\/strong>: There is a large disparity among states in terms of cost of production of a crop due to factors such as land, labour costs and scale of production. <strong>For instance<\/strong>, the projected A2+FL for paddy ranges from \u20b9759 a quintal in Punjab to \u20b92,405 in Maharashtra for the 2021-22 kharif marketing season.<\/p>\n<p>However, a single MSP is declared for the entire country based on a weighted average.
