This excretion is so valuable it is referred to as <strong>floating gold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ambergris is produced only by an estimated 1% of sperm whales.<\/p>\n<p><b>Formation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incorrectly referred to as <strong>\u2018whale vomit<\/strong>\u2019. This is because one of the theories about its formation suggests that it is produced in the <strong>gastrointestinal tract of some of the sperm whales<\/strong> for the passage of hard, sharp objects that are ingested when the whale eats large quantities of marine animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Uses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ambergris is <strong>used to produce perfumes<\/strong> which have notes of musk. There are also records of it being used to flavor food, in alcoholic beverages and tobacco in some cultures in the past. Ancient Egyptians used it as<strong> incense<\/strong>. It is also believed to be used in some <strong>traditional medicines<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it is rarely used for these purposes presently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Protection to sperm whales<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><b>There is a ban on possession and trade of ambergris <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in countries like the USA, Australia and India.
