The Crime Branch of Pune police has arrested two persons and seized 550 grams of ambergris, also known as \u2018floating gold\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

What is <\/b>A<\/b>mbergris?<\/b><\/h5>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A<\/b>mbergris<\/b> is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull grey or blackish colour produced in the digestive system of <\/span>sperm whales<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

German physician Franz Schwediawer in 1783 called it \u201cpreternaturally hardened whale dung<\/strong>\u201d. This excretion is so valuable it is referred to as floating gold<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

However, Ambergris is produced only by an estimated 1% of sperm whales.<\/p>\n

Formation: <\/b>It is <\/span>incorrectly referred to as \u2018whale vomit<\/strong>\u2019. This is because one of the theories about its formation suggests that it is produced in the gastrointestinal tract of some of the sperm whales<\/strong> for the passage of hard, sharp objects that are ingested when the whale eats large quantities of marine animals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Uses:<\/b> Ambergris is used to produce perfumes<\/strong> which have notes of musk. There are also records of it being used to flavor food, in alcoholic beverages and tobacco in some cultures in the past. Ancient Egyptians used it as incense<\/strong>. It is also believed to be used in some traditional medicines<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

But it is rarely used for these purposes presently.<\/span><\/p>\n

Protection to sperm whales
\n<\/b><\/h5>\n

There is a ban on possession and trade of ambergris <\/b>in countries like the USA, Australia and India. In several other countries, it is a tradable commodity but with limitations.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Indian context,<\/b> the sperm whales are a protected species under <\/span>Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Protection Act <\/b>and possession or trade of its by-products, including Ambergris and its byproducts, is illegal under provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
