Where we stand vis-a-vis China?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

China\u2019s economy is<\/span>\u00a0over five times\u00a0of\u00a0India\u2019s.\u00a0it has a\u00a0<\/span>$14-trillion economy, to India\u2019s\u00a0$2.7-trillion economy<\/span><\/b>. We are too dependent on China for everything from active pharmaceutical ingredients to smartphones. And China\u2019s total R&D spending is 20 times\u00a0that of\u00a0India\u2019s<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How the current situation offers a chance to India of catching up?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0Even though China has fully vaccinated over 90 per cent of its total population (we are at 50 per cent of our adult population), it continues to\u00a0<\/span>follow a zero-covid policy<\/span><\/i><\/b>. This self-isolation is\u00a0<\/span>having an impact on China\u2019s economy \u2014 domestic travel is well below even last year\u2019s level, domestic consumption is depressed, and increasingly draconian zero-Covid practices are having an impact<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2)Further,\u00a0<\/span>new controls on China\u2019s tech giants<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>increasingly anti-business rhetoric<\/span><\/b>\u00a0from top leaders of the country has generated concerns regarding ease of doing business in China. As a result,\u00a0<\/span>private equity investors from across the globe are all expressing concern<\/span><\/b>\u00a0about an excessive reliance on China. There is a\u00a0<\/span>widespread undercurrent of wanting to diversify away<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3)China has an extractive institution model in political sphere (due to its authoritarian regime) and inclusive economic institutions but\u00a0as the book\u00a0<\/span>why Nations fail<\/span><\/b>\u00a0argue ,this\u00a0is not sustainable in the long run, and\u00a0i<\/span>nclusive economic institutions can only survive if they are supported by inclusive political institutions<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and this may create some opportunities for\u00a0India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/span><\/b>-As China struggles, a window of opportunity for India to catch up has opened. We must take full advantage, but that means being clear of what makes us unique as a country,\u00a0where\u00a0our\u00a0strengths really lie, and how we can play to them<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
