Mountains are most\u00a0<\/span>environmentally sensitive ecosystems<\/span><\/b>, and are being impacted by the\u00a0<\/span>adversities of climate change and other environmental hazards<\/span><\/b>\u00a0such as increasing plastic waste,\u00a0at a rapid rate<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Waste Management\u00a0<\/span><\/b>in mountains is crucial\u00a0for their sustainability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sources of Plastic waste –\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. High\u00a0<\/span>tourist\u00a0<\/span><\/b>footfall.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
      \n
    1. Plastic used in\u00a0<\/span>Packaging<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      1. Presence of various\u00a0<\/span>manufacturing\u00a0industries. Example<\/span><\/b>– Pharmaceutical Industry in\u00a0Himachal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        1. Household waste<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          \u00a0This problem requires\u00a0<\/span>Multi stakeholder<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>approach<\/span><\/b>\u00a0as follows –<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          1)<\/span>A<\/span><\/b>dministrative level<\/span><\/b>–\u00a0Following steps can be taken by civil administration for waste management.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          2)\u00a0<\/span>Business Level\/Corporate responsibility<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>– Success of business relies on a healthy planet<\/span>, they should strive to reduce the waste and emissions while simultaneously optimizing production measures through a comprehensive action plan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          3<\/span>)<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>Community Participation and\u00a0\u00a0Behavioural\u00a0Change<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>–\u00a0<\/span>Littering and not segregating waste<\/span><\/b>\u00a0at household level are two primary reasons which make waste management much more complex,\u00a0<\/span>high tourism footfall<\/span><\/b>\u00a0in hills makes it much more difficult. There is a need to\u00a0<\/span>foster partnerships<\/span><\/b>\u00a0among local non-profit organizations, trader associations and schools,\u00a0<\/span>providing bins at key locations<\/span><\/b>, door to door awareness drives<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and sector-specific training modules.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          Conclusion<\/span><\/b>–<\/span>True essence of sustainable development lies in\u00a0<\/span>fulfilling present needs without compromising the needs of future generations.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>We all have an obligation towards one another, our future generations and other species to sustain the planet and make it a better place, which would require\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0collaborative approach<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
