What is Nuclear Fusion?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nuclear fusion is <\/span>not a new concept<\/span><\/b>, scientists have known about it since Einstein\u2019s times<\/span>.\u00a0It is an\u00a0<\/span>inexhaustible supply of energy, without pollution or global warming<\/span><\/b>, and the phenomena that\u00a0<\/span>powers our Sun<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How is it different from Nuclear Fission<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fusion is not the same as\u00a0<\/span>fission. In fission,\u00a0the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei<\/span><\/b>, releasing the vast amounts of energy holding them together, thus powering nuclear reactors and thermonuclear bombs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In a fusion reaction, two light\u00a0<\/span><\/b>nuclei<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>merge to form a single heavier nucleus<\/span><\/b>. The process releases energy because the total mass of the resulting single nucleus is less than the mass of the two original nuclei.\u00a0The leftover mass becomes energy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Do we have working Nuclear Fusion models?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Physicists have since 1950s\u00a0<\/span>tried to generate energy through nuclear fusion<\/span><\/b>\u00a0but the problem is that the energy used to make this happen exceeded the energy released.\u00a0Which\u00a0defeats\u00a0the purpose and making the process \u2018hot\u2019 and not \u2018cold\u2019 fusion.\u00a0But recent attempts by both government and private sector have been encouraging and there have been\u00a0<\/span>definite progress if not complete success.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If any of these attempts\u00a0succeed,\u00a0it\u00a0will give us unlimited clean fuel to power our planet forever, much like the sun has been doing.<\/span>\u00a0Cold fusion energy could be our best bet against climate disaster.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
