News<\/span><\/b>–\u00a0<\/span>Discovery of a new coronavirus variant in South Africa, called Omicron, has\u00a0led to\u00a0countries\u00a0once again restricting or entirely eliminating the freedom to travel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why these<\/span><\/b>\u00a0knee-jerk<\/span><\/b>\u00a0reactions like travel bans are not effective?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0V<\/span>irus is\u00a0<\/span>well on its way to becoming endemic<\/span><\/b>\u00a0at many places.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0<\/span>Also there appears no need to\u00a0lock away one country when\u00a0<\/span>this virus is already on multiple continents<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>fter the\u00a0<\/span>initial outbreak, travel restrictions have very little impact<\/span><\/b>\u00a0on virus spread.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0<\/span>Unlike 2020 we now have\u00a0<\/span>tests, vaccines and various\u00a0tools, so<\/span><\/b>\u00a0we aren\u2019t as helpless as we were then.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4)<\/span>\u00a0Travel restrictions bring with them\u00a0<\/span>hidden human and economic cost<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of de-connecting the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the steps that should be taken?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0<\/span>Implementing public health and social measures<\/span><\/b>\u00a0should be prioritized-Proven personal hygiene measures like\u00a0<\/span>hand washing, social distancing and mask-wearing<\/span><\/b>\u00a0should be religiously followed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0<\/span>Using IT tools<\/span><\/b>\u00a0–<\/span>Data-driven decisions, consistent set of health protocols, contact-tracing<\/span>\u00a0and screening measures can help governments to keep their borders open without compromising on public health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0<\/span>Vaccines<\/span><\/b>–\u00a0<\/span>Making COVID vaccines available to all<\/span>.\u00a0There exists a\u00a0<\/span>wide disparity\u00a0between the\u00a0developed and developing countries<\/span><\/b>\u00a0in this aspect. We should remember that\u00a0<\/span>no one is safe till everyone is safe.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
