News<\/span><\/b>–\u00a0<\/span>Centre\u2019s relaunched National Mission for Edible Oil-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP)\u00a0to expand area under oil palm,\u00a0largely\u00a0in\u00a0southern and north-eastern parts of the country. Recently ICAR also launched report on palm oil cultivation in India.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What does ICAR study says about oil palm cultivation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ICAR analysis shows oil palm\u00a0cultivation\u00a0requires\u00a0<\/span>less water than rice, banana and sugarcane. T<\/span><\/b>hus,\u00a0it will be a suitable option for\u00a0<\/span>crop\u00a0diversification, especially<\/span><\/b>\u00a0as an\u00a0<\/span>alternative to rice.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is National Mission for Edible Oil-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At present, less than 0.5 million hectares is under Oil Palm cultivation in India domestically, largely in Andhra Pradesh and a few North-Eastern state<\/span>s.\u00a0<\/span>Mission<\/span><\/b>\u00a0plans to raise oil palm cultivation to 1.7-1.8 million hectares by 2029-30.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How mission plans to Increase area under Oil palm cultivation<\/span><\/b>–<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Price assurance to farmers<\/span><\/b>–<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Government\u00a0has approved a benchmark\u00a0<\/span>purchase price for oil palm along the lines of the existing Minimum Support Price (MSP) and\u00a0Provide Viability gap Funding to protect\u00a0farmers’\u00a0interest.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Incentive to oil palm processors<\/span><\/b>\u00a0if they set up their units in North-Eastern states.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What are the apprehensions regarding oil palm plantation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Large scale deforestation<\/span><\/b>– According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the expansion of oil palm plantations is likely to cause\u00a0huge\u00a0forest\u00a0loss.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Felling and burning of forests impact populations\u00a0<\/span>of endangered wildlife<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span>disrupts local livelihoods and\u00a0<\/span><\/b>contribute\u00a0<\/span>to global warming<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      What can be challenges in realising the goals of Mission<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Previous such efforts have not yielded much results<\/span><\/b>\u00a0due to the following reasons<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. Firstly<\/span><\/b>, farmers have to\u00a0<\/span>wait for four years<\/span><\/b>\u00a0for the trees in India to start yielding palm fruit bunches, which would then give palm oil and palm kernel oil.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Secondly<\/span><\/b>, Indian farmers\u00a0<\/span>generally have very small farm holdings<\/span><\/b>, making investments in a sector like palm with varied and geographically diverse marginal farm holdings challenging.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Thirdly, Corporate sector investments<\/span><\/b>\u00a0in oil palm are\u00a0<\/span>limited<\/span><\/b>\u00a0as compared with Malaysia and Indonesia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        For plantations\u00a0<\/span>to be successful, these have to be taken up on a large scale to create efficiencies<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
