Context-<\/span><\/b>Although Water pollution has been a concern since many decades .But, radioactive pollution of water is newly emerging threat. Recently, radioactive contamination and associated health impacts have been reported in many parts of the globe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ra<\/span>dioactivity is the phenomenon of spontaneous emission of particles or waves from the unstable nuclei of some elements.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What causes radioactive pollution-<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)<\/span>Natural causes<\/span><\/b>– Percolation of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) from the soil to the aquifer causes groundwater contamination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2)<\/span>Anthropogenic sources<\/span><\/b>– These can be divided into two types-a)<\/span>Major\u00a0sources<\/span><\/b>–\u00a0Nuclear\u00a0reactors and nuclear warhead experiments,\u00a0Nuclear\u00a0submarines, nuclear power\u00a0houses(which also use water as a coolant) and dumping of radioactive waste. b)<\/span>\u00a0Minor sources-\u00a0A<\/span><\/b>pplication of radioisotopes in industries and scientific laboratories,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How these sources contaminate water<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dumping of these radioactive wastes in surface waterbodies causes water pollution.\u00a0However,\u00a0<\/span>Radioactive\u00a0contamination is more prevalent in groundwater as compared to surface water since it is much exposed to radioactive elements found in the rocks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does this effect human health<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Small amount of radiation is found in all types of water but the extended amount of radiation is harmful to human health<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)<\/span>Immediate consequences<\/span><\/b>–\u00a0D<\/span>istressing\u00a0skin, lungs,\u00a0genitals,\u00a0and causing\u00a0hair fall.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2)<\/span>Long term effects<\/span><\/b>-Exposure to\u00a0<\/span>radiation\u00a0causes\u00a0various\u00a0disorders in human\u00a0physiology, including\u00a0cancer, leukaemia,\u00a0genetic mutations and\u00a0chromosomal\u00a0disruption,\u00a0etc.Sometimes\u00a0it can be fatal also<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3)<\/span>Hereditary\u00a0disorders\u00a0<\/span><\/b>-Ionizing radiation induces\u00a0mutations in germ cells\u00a0resulting in structural alteration in germ cell DNA\u00a0that\u00a0are\u00a0passed on to\u00a0offsprings.\u00a0<\/span>Example of nuclear accidents-\u00a0Chernobyl .<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What can be done to prevent this<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Treatment methods like aeration, reverse osmosis, ion exchange and granule carbon adsorption are effective remedial measures for treating the radioactive contaminated wat<\/span>er.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
