{"id":152829,"date":"2021-12-13T19:51:25","date_gmt":"2021-12-13T14:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=152829"},"modified":"2021-12-13T19:52:01","modified_gmt":"2021-12-13T14:22:01","slug":"haiderpur-wetland-added-to-ramsar-site-total-tally-goes-up-to-47","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/haiderpur-wetland-added-to-ramsar-site-total-tally-goes-up-to-47\/","title":{"rendered":"Haiderpur Wetland added to Ramsar site; total tally goes up to 47"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5><b>What is the news?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haiderpur Wetland of Western Uttar Pradesh has been recognized as 47th Ramsar site in the country and 10th in Uttar Pradesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>About Haiderpur Wetland<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haiderpur Wetland is a human made wetland situated on the Muzaffarnagar-Bijnor border in Uttar Pradesh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was formed in 1984 by the construction of <strong>Madhya Ganga Barrage<\/strong> at the confluence of Solani and Ganga rivers and is a part of Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haiderpur Wetland supports a variety of plant species as it is a <strong>source of freshwater and groundwater recharge.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also supports more than 15 globally threatened species such as the critically endangered gharial and the endangered hog deer, black-bellied tern, steppe eagle, Indian skimmer and gold mahseer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site also regularly supports more than one per cent of the population of <strong>greylag goose (Anser anser)<\/strong> and <strong>bar-headed goose (Anser indicus).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>What is the significance of this recognition?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recognition of the Haiderpur wetland is significant for the ecology that is suffering the impact of climate change and losing varied plant and animal species.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/answered-what-is-wetland-explain-the-ramsar-concept-of-wise-use-in-the-context-of-wetland-conservation-cite-two-examples-of-ramsar-sites-from-india\/\">Ramsar Convention on wetlands<\/a><\/strong><\/span> report, the wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests, with 35% of the wetlands lost from 1970-2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, this is an alarming situation demanding urgent attention, as 40% of the world\u2019s plant and animal species breed in wetlands.
