News<\/span><\/b>– Electric Vehicle Penetration in Delhi has reached\u00a0<\/span>9 percent as against the national average of 1.6 percent,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0making\u00a0<\/span>Delhi leading state in India in EV penetration<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0This anomaly exists\u00a0<\/span>despite the countrywide launch of FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of E-vehicles) Scheme by the central\u00a0government<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Electric vehicle adoption may help Delhi and Country to fight Pollution<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vehicular emission is one of the most significant\u00a0sources\u00a0of pollution in the country and\u00a0especially in Delhi.\u00a0Several studies show that<\/span>\u00a0a third of all PM 2.5 emissions and over 80 percent of CO2 and NOx emissions are from vehicular exhaust.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Experts suggest that a reduction in vehicular pollution will require a mass shift of people to EVs, apart from greater adoption of public and non-motorised\u00a0transport.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What inhibits the adoption of Electric Vehicle Nationally and how Delhi has overcome these<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. High upfront cost of EVs<\/span><\/b>–<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Even after subsidies under schemes like FAME,\u00a0buyers still need to pay more for EVs upfront than for petrol\/diesel vehicles. The wide acceptance in Delhi for Electric vehicle can be attributed to policies of Delhi government like targeting the most polluting vehicle segments\u00a0<\/span>(two and\u00a0three wheeler). It has\u00a0fully exempted such EVs from\u00a0road tax and registration fees, making subsidies\u00a0available\u00a0hassle free for the masses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Unavailability of charging infrastructure-<\/span><\/b>\u00a0India will need widespread charging infrastructure to make EV a popular\u00a0choice.\u00a0<\/span>Delhi is planning to provide public charging within 3 km anywhere in\u00a0the area.\u00a0\u00a0It\u00a0already has the highest number of installed charging stations in the country<\/span>.\u00a0Delhi government is planning to provide charging\u00a0infrstructure\u00a0at all important public places like metro stations,\u00a0offices,\u00a0malls ,etc.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Low public awareness of EVs and its benefits\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u2014 both economic and environmental.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Delhi launched widespread campaign comprising print, radio, TV ads and targeted outreach to RWAs, youth and corporates<\/span>\u00a0was launched that involved public and celebrities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    For widespread adoption of Electric vehicle there is\u00a0<\/span>need of strong political will, comprehensive reform roadmaps and their implementation.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Best practices from states can be implemented nationally to have palpable outcomes in near future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
