A study conducted\u00a0by<\/span>\u00a0ETH\u00a0Zurich\u00a0<\/span>(a public research university) has shown\u00a0that the\u00a0impact of plastic on climate and health is greater than previously thought due to the increased use of coal.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some findings of report are:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0Plastic production accounted for the 96 percent of the Particulate matter\u00a0health footprint.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Health Footprint is the amount of health resources that are consumed due to a particular\u00a0reason\/substance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0Global carbon footprint of plastic doubled since 1995, accounting for 4.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0Developing countries like China, Indonesia and South Africa, were among the major producers of plastic and thus suffered from 75 percent of particulate matter-related health impacts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4)\u00a0Study also showed that about half of this emission comes from coal used during the production of plastic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5)\u00a0Fine particulate air pollution from plastic production caused approximately 2.2 million disability-adjusted life years (DALY).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DALY is a measure of overall disease burden, expressed as the number of years lost due to ill-health, disability or early death.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the impact of plastic production on health?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When coal is burned\u00a0during plastic production, it produces\u00a0particulate matter\u00a0that accumulate in the\u00a0air.\u00a0<\/span>Particulate pollution is a mixture of soot, smoke, and tiny particles formed in the atmosphere from sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH3).<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u00a0is highly harmful and can cause asthma, bronchitis and cardiovascular disease.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
