Current education curriculum is completely detached from a student\u2019s life. It is highly theoretical and leaves very less space for intellectual development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For example-\u00a0Students of class 10th\u00a0are\u00a0expected to learn about DC motors and parallel\u00a0resistances. Whereas\u00a0reality\u00a0is that\u00a0<\/span>less than 50 per cent of Class 8 students of rural government schools can do division. (ASER Report 2016-18 by Pratham NGO).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is need for\u00a0<\/span>moving away from deep theoretical education to a practical broad-based one which\u00a0<\/span>can lead to development and generation of jobs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How can application\u00a0based\u00a0practical learning help in solving day to day problems-<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Case study<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As is widely known that\u00a0<\/span>subsidized\u00a0electricity has\u00a0led\u00a0to inefficient use of groundwater and thus its depletion<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A study at IIT Bombay by the name Project on Climate Resilient Agriculture has documented a case study about restructuring of electricity distribution network in\u00a0Washim\u00a0(Maharashtra).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here basic engineering knowledge and restructuring was used to\u00a0<\/span>improve performance, save cost of installation of new connections\u00a0and cut\u00a0down distribution losses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This\u00a0<\/span>reduced the stress and agricultural loss that farmers suffer due to breakdown of supply.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What are the advantages of practical learning\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It gives solutions that provide jobs, save resources, and improve the lives of our people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It does not need cutting-edge research capability in any one discipline. Instead, it needs a multidisciplinary approach\u00a0which\u00a0takes\u00a0best\u00a0from\u00a0different fields.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This approach to education\u00a0provides\u00a0solutions that\u00a0make best use of available\u00a0capacity\u00a0instead of investing huge\u00a0amount\u00a0of\u00a0resources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Example-<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Solutions like target of installation of 18 lakh solar pumps under scheme like PM-KUSUM have easy implementation but have low advantage over\u00a0some\u00a0practical solutions.\u00a0These require huge capital which make them a low return on investment option.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(<\/span>PM -KUSUM<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was launched for\u00a0<\/span>ensuring energy security for farmers in India, along with honoring India\u2019s commitment to increase the share of installed capacity of electric power from non-fossil-fuel sources<\/span>.)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Practical\u00a0approach involves\u00a0contextual learning\u00a0which has better learning outcomes. As seen in some tribal areas that it is a better option than using tribal language as a medium.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Contextual learning<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0<\/span>method<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of instruction that enables students to apply new knowledge and skills to real-life situations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A recent MIT study shows that\u00a0Contextualized\u00a0learning and inter-disciplinary approach can teach students how to solve actual problems.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
