Tiruvannamalai a district in Tamil Nadu has set a record for creating\u00a0more than thousands of farm ponds\u00a0in 30 days by leveraging the\u00a0<\/span>Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(MGNREGS).\u00a0This\u00a0will also help the recently launched\u00a0<\/span>state climate mission\u00a0in Tamil Nadu.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the initiative<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This initiative\u00a0focused\u00a0on water conservation and building green infrastructure through interventions like creating mini-forests, pastureland development, rejuvenating the relevance of common property resources, etc.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This example demonstrates the value of using existing mechanisms, an inclusive approach to facilitate\u00a0climate\u00a0resilience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How this will help in climate change mitigation and adaptation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0It will\u00a0<\/span>ensure adequate supply of water for agricultural and domestic purposes<\/span><\/b>\u00a0throughout the year. Bulk of work undertaken in MGNREGA relates to water conservation and harvesting, irrigation, afforestation and rural connectivity. This can be used to build climate resilience Infrastructure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How this initiative can be implemented elsewhere?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0<\/span>Convergence of both top-down and bottom-up processes<\/span><\/b>-key stakeholders from various government departments, professional technical and experts should be involved.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Example\u00a0<\/span><\/b>–\u00a0Technology like Geographic information system was used in Tiruvannamalai and technical staff at the village panchayat level was trained to\u00a0analyze\u00a0spatial and non-spatial data.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0Converting the\u00a0<\/span>complex scientific information into data that could be understood<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and acted upon by village departments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
